DIT L'ÉCOSSAIS:

The name Martin is very widespread in all countries. This is because it was taken as of the twelfth century from a Christian name to become surname.  

At one time in Canada  not less than one hundred different lines of "Martin" colonists who came from all parts of Europe including France, England, Ireland and even Germany.
